Eczema and Psoriasis

“I have been suffering from eczema/psoriasis for 49 years, since I was one year old. My parents had taken me to dozens of dermatologists which were unsuccessful in helping me.

As a teenager, I used to spend my vacation time in a hospital in Leiden, Holland, where nurses would coat my entire body with a strong smelling sticky black tar. The tar treatment only temporarily reduced some of the inflammation. Finally when I was 17, a doctor in Belgium gave me a prescription for cortisone pills (a kind of steroids) and cream which rapidly cleared my eczema as by "magic".

I thought I had finally found the "miracle cure" and was elated but totally unaware of the danger of cortisone. I continued to take this medication for 9 years to keep the eczema in check, not realizing that in the process the cortisone's nasty side effects was destroying my immune system and slowly killing me”

Eczema with Natural Means”, March 1997

Eczema and psoriasis are often mistaken due to their similarity in appearance which sometimes even doctors and dermatologists have trouble identifying them. They usually appear as inflamed red skins that are often itchy, dry and flaky. These two skin problems are classified as dermatitis, which simply means skin inflammation. People tend to scratch the infected areas due to the sometimes unbearable itchiness which will only worsen the condition and expand the area of infection.

The causes of eczema and psoriasis vary and are often difficult to determine. But what is concluded is that people with thin, dry or sensitive skin are usually more prone to them. According to clinical researches, allergies to certain food categories may increase the chances of developing eczema and psoriasis.

Eczema causes crusty sores, scabs, thickened skin, skin eruptions (e.g. pimples) and even lesions. It also increases the chance of other skin infections or diseases. Besides developing eczema due to the characteristics of the skin, it can also be generic.

Psoriasis produces reddish lesions with flaky scales on the skin, which can easily lead to internal bleeding under the skin. These scales are the excess skin generated when the skin cell growth rate gets out of control, resulting in the cells growing too quickly, sometimes 1,000 times faster than the normal rate of growth.

Not only do eczema and psoriasis cause unpleasant appearance, they also affect the health like creating poisonous toxins in the body, increasing food sensitivities etc.

Eczema and psoriasis can be cured by medication, but some such medications may be too harsh on the liver especially when impaired liver is one of the rare causes of psoriasis. Thus, it is usually recommended to treat them in the safest and most natural way which includes a combination of healthy food & natural remedies.

For treatments externally, the key is to keep the skin moisturized. Choose products that are for dry skin and made with natural ingredients. Mild scrubbing should be done at least once a week and applying moisturizer within 3 minutes after patting the skin dry, as it is the time when the skin is the most absorbent. Similarly, only bar soaps made of natural ingredients should be used but not the commercial types found off the shelves as they usually strip moisture off the skin or cause further irritation. They may have nice scent and attractive appearance, but the effects of using them in the long run is definitely undesirable.

Another natural way to treat eczema and psoriasis is by do intensive treatments like having a Dead Sea Mineral Mud Therapy 2 to 3 times a week, which the number of times can be lessen after the condition improves. Mild scrubbing or soaking in warm water with Dead Sea Mineral Salt Scrub regularly will also detoxify the skin and get rid of harmful impurities, keeping skin clear and healthy. Replace artificial moisturizers with those made up of natural ingredients or 100% pure carrier oils such as Jojoba Oil. Not only can Jojoba Oil heals the skin but also sooth the itching, to prevent temptation to scratch the infected areas. It balances the skin’s sebum secretion to ensure sufficient hydration and healing infected skins. However, it is important to ensure that these products used are 100% pure but not mixed with other artificial ingredients which may worsen the condition.
